Public confidence in government? That’s quite the conundrum.

How is it possible to have any confidence in a government run by a man re-elected despite a four-year record of failure who insisted two days ago that he knew nothing about the IRS internal investigation or the alleged singling out of conservative groups?

Obviously, there are missing links in the chain of command.

How can there be any public confidence in a government run for the people by the people we elected who authorized the funding for the more than $92 million dollars in bonuses—considered by the IRS as “taxable supplemental wages”— that were doled out by IRS “executives” to employees since 2009?

The beleaguered and unbelievable IRS will be responsible for enforcing many of the Affordable Care Act rules and regulations, the seven-foot stack of rules and regulations known as the “red tape tower”. Feeling confident about that?

How can there be any public confidence in a government that continues to suppress the truth about the September 11, 2012 Benghazi terrorist attack despite the release of 100 pages of emails between the “intelligence analysts” and State Department officials shortly after it happened?

Or in a Justice Department that seized the phone records from the Associated Press as part of the investigation into the leaks about the incident?

Or in the Attorney General who was “one of the officials” who had access to the leaked information?

Mr. Obama has been up to his elbows in damage control this week. But this isn’t about damage control. This is about the damage that has been done to our country that is spinning out of control. So much for “Hope and Change”, “Yes We Can” and “Forward”.

The mainstream media has already begun reporting on how the Republicans will try to pin this mess on the President.

When his lawyer went to visit him and they were only permitted one hour to confer and only through a glass screen, his lawyer spoke with the Warden and was granted access to the pretrial detainee whenever convenient and White was given full access to his lawyer via phone any time he needs to do so.
-The IRS apologized for what it acknowledged was "inappropriate targeting of conservative political groups during the 2012 election to see if they were violating their tax-exempt status” and blamed low-level employees, not motivated by bias, claiming no high-level officials were aware of it.

Frazzled White House spokesman Jay Carney said it was “indeed inappropriate for the IRS to target tea party groups” but skipped answering questions as to whether the White House itself would investigate. Carney said the administration “expects a thorough investigation by the Treasury Department’s Inspector General for tax administration.

Ironically, the Inspector General has been “looking into the issue since last summer and his report is expected to come out next week”. Sounds like the perfect case for Inspector Clouseau: "Yes, I kneuw that... I kneuw that". That is what I have been saying, you idiots!"

-Concerns over the deterioration in the U.S. Air Force’s nuclear mission have been raised again. The Associated Press reported that “in a March inspection the 91st wing was rated ‘marginal,’ the equivalent of a ‘D’ grade, when tested on launch skills”.

Other issues include “willful rule violations such as leaving open the multi-ton blast door to a launch compartment” and that’s just a sampling of what’s happening.

Too bad Dr. Strangelove’s Major T.J. “King” Kong isn’t around for this folly.

-The Honorable Elijah Cummings (D-Md.), the top D on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee accused Republicans of “distorting the remarks of a star witness testifying before the panel this week on Benghazi”. Of course he would.

-It only took five years for the Mario Negri Institute for Pharmacological Research in Milan, Italy, to determine that “eating fish is good for your heart but taking fish oil capsules does not help people at high risk of heart problems who are already taking medicines to prevent them”.

-O.J., now Nevada inmate No. 1027820, formerly No. 32, is headed for Vegas next week to ask for a new trial on the grounds that “his lawyer botched his case”. Simpson claims “the Florida lawyer who collected nearly $700,000 is to blame for his armed robbery and kidnapping conviction in 2008 and his 2010 failed appeal to the Nevada Supreme Court”.

If a new trial is granted and “The Juice” gets out, he can keep his promise to find the killers of his ex-wife and her friend in LA in 1994…

-O’Malley revealed steps to increase prison security. Next week, corrections officers from outside of Baltimore will be deployed to the detention center to inspect visitors to the prison to reduce smuggling. And he wants lawmakers to classify cell phone smuggling a felony. Does that mean locking the barn door after the horse is gone would then be classified as a misdemeanor?

-Kicking off his campaign for governor, Lt. Governor Anthony Brown told a “cheering crowd of 500 people” that under the O'Malley-Brown leadership, Maryland has made progress.

“It is not enough to have a low unemployment rate, when we have the same pockets of poverty when Dr. King marched up the steps of the Lincoln Memorial,” Brown said to the group who picnicked on hot dogs and hamburgers in the grove at PG Community College awaiting his arrival.

"Maryland is a great state, but it could be better," Candidate Brown said.

By The Washington Times

Friday, April 5, 2013

As the Maryland House of Delegates takes its final vote on a gun control bill and sends the measure to the state Senate for approval, I am reminded of the last words written on this topic by my late husband, Ron Smith, a radio talk show host, Emmy Award winner and Baltimore Sun columnist.

In December 2011 he wrote: “I’ve been portrayed on The Baltimore Sun’s editorial page (back when they could still afford a cartoonist), as a revolver spewing bullets out of my mouth. But the funny thing is that more than two dozen American states have seen fit to allow responsible citizens to arm themselves effectively (that is with concealed handguns) to defend themselves, their families and their property. Maryland lags behind, trapped in liberal lunacy as it is. The phrase ‘gun control’ sounds so soothing, so benign, that otherwise intelligent, self-sufficient people can be fooled by it. Once the facts are made clear to them, they see the light. A disarmed citizenry is not a citizenry at all. The framers knew that. Hence the Second Amendment. That old rascal Machiavelli put it best when he said a disarmed man is not only defenseless, he is contemptible. The power of the status quo is so immense, one can miss it.”

Many of us did miss it, and for a long time. Many still do.
